Road Safety Group joins Community Speedwatch Scheme

Working with support and direction from West Yorkshire Police, Ackworth Parish Council’s Road Safety Group took part in the Community Speedwatch Scheme. During the last two weeks of October, District and Parish Councillors, members of South East Link Road Action Group (SELRAG) and residents volunteered to monitor the speed of vehicles using a speed indication device. The device was used on Barnsley Road (between Oakfield Park School and Chiltern Drive), Doncaster Road (near to Doncaster Road Estate), Carr Bridge (adjacent to the Pavilion), Pontefract Road (from Mill Hill up to Ackworth School), Station Road (near to Lee Lane) and Wakefield Road (near to Angel Pub and Kings Close) .

The scheme aims to :

  • Improve the quality of life for local residents
  • Reduce collisions and the severity of injuries on local roads
  • Make drivers aware of their speeds, the dangers of speeding & encourage them to slow down

The Parish Council will continue to be involved in the scheme and the speed indication device will be in the village again in the new year. We had 15 volunteers take part this time, if you are interested in road safety and would like to get involved please contact us

Invertebrates are particularly sensitive to changes in water quality and so are fantastic natural indicators. We are currently looking for volunteers to help us with this project by contributing to this monitoring plan. If you are interested in volunteering on this project please contact Alec Boyd at: 07342999209 at or via email: alec.boyd@ywt.org.uk.
