Christmas Lights – the Parish Council have recently switched on the Christmas Lights at the Green. Due to the narrowness of the road light features on the lampposts in High Ackworth were unsuitable. We have been in negotiations with Wakefield MDC for a number of years to have the trees on the Green lit. The planning for this has been ongoing for over a year, the Parish Council agreed to pay the full cost of having the electricity supplied on to the Green and purchase the led lights. Due to their budget constraints Wakefield MDC were unable to contribute towards the costs.
As in previous years the light features on the lampposts throughout the village have also been switched on. The Parish Council pay a contribution to Wakefield MDC of £2,500 for these to be erected, maintained and taken down.
The net lights on some of the lampposts have caused quite a few complaints and I can assure you that the Councillors have also voiced their concerns at a meeting with officers. Amey have taken over the responsibility and cost of maintaining and supplying new lampposts throughout the Wakefield MDC area and they have put restrictions on the type of light feature that can be erected on lampposts. This is due to ‘windage’ – the weight of the light feature has to be taken into account when the wind blows. The net lights are obviously light and do not affect the structure of the lamppost when the wind blows.
Low Ackworth playing field – the play equipment has recently been replaced with new equipment and safety surfacing. Work has also been carried out on the overgrown shrubbery area near to the wall to ensure that the children using the play equipment can be seen and are no longer hidden away from view. An additional portable unit will be installed in the next few months next to the current Community Centre to provide additional accommodation for the youth group and other young peoples groups who meet in the area.
West Yorkshire Police Officers are available to discuss any problems or raise any issues of concern in the village. These sessions are held on the second Saturday of every month between 10 am and 11 am at the Parish Council Community Centre, Bell Lane, Ackworth.
